What is a Truck Scale?
A truck scale is a large set of scales typically mounted on concrete foundations and used to weigh trucks along with their contents. The weight of the load a truck carries is calculated by the difference between the truck’s weight when loaded and when it’s empty.
Truck scales are essential in industries that operate a fleet of trucks daily and need to monitor inventory, costs, and other logistical metrics. Having a reliable and accurate truck scale helps such businesses operate efficiently and safeguard revenue streams.
Truck scales have developed considerably over time, with modern variations coming in different sizes and using new technology to provide a solution for any application.
A truck scale can be broken down into several main components. These are the foundation, load cell, terminal, scale deck, junction box, and cables. Depending on the state and regional requirements, most truck scales are installed with concrete pits or aboveground foundations. Unlike older mechanical scales, modern truck scales can be installed in shallow rather than deep pits.
Load cells generate an analog signal converted into a digital signal at the load cell itself, weight indicator, or junction box to accurately display the truck’s weight. You’ll find these load cells at the corners of each module. If well maintained, a truck scale can last you upwards of 25 years.
Most of these components are standard in most truck scales, with slight differences in the deck and load cell in most types.
